Flexible Scope Repair
Avoiding scope repairs can be difficult. With normal wear and tear, scopes sometimes need repair. However, there is some scope damage that can be avoided with proper care and handling.
The Light guide bundle is a common repair due to improper care of your flexible scope.
Possible causes of light guide bundle repairs include the following:
1. Over coiling the light guide tube and/or the insertion tube, cuts, slices, puncture, buckles or compression to the light guide tube and/or the insertion tube
2. Improper alignment of the internal components causing stress on the light guide bundle causing it to break...this is usually the result of a repair that was performed improperly
3, Fluid invasion can cause the light guide bundle to become brittle and break or weaken
4. Storing your flexible scope improperly, such as in a drawer of an SMR cart
5. If there is damage to the bending section this can break the light guide and/or decrease light output
How to avoid damage to the light guide fiber bundle:
1. Avoid dent or buckle damage on the external tubes. Buckles and dents can pinch the fiber bundles and cause breakage
2. Avoid sharp bends or tight coils on the flexible tubes and scope
3. Avoid stacking scopes at all times
4. Always leak test each scope after each procedure to prevent fluid invasion. Fluid can severely damage the fiber bundles. If you suspect a leak in your scope, send it in for repair immediately. To repair a leaking tube is thousands of dollars less than repairing fluid damage!
If you find you do need a scope repair, don't wait. Using the scope when it is already damaged can cause even more damage to your scope. Find a reputable repair company and make sure they give a warranty on their repairs. A 3 month warranty is standard.
